Tax preparation is at the heart of what we do at Klabo, Brown & Co., LLC. Since 2005, we've prepared returns for individuals, families, farms, sole proprietors, partnerships, S corporations and nonprofits throughout Aberdeen and northeastern South Dakota. Whether your situation fits on a postcard or on a dozen schedules, we take the same approach: careful preparation, honest answers and no shortcuts.
Most individual clients bring or mail us their documents, or use our office to drop them off, and we follow up with questions as they come up. Every return is reviewed before filing, and we e-file whenever the return type permits it. When your return is done, we walk you through it — what you paid, why, and what might change next year.
Before we begin, you'll receive an engagement letter setting out the scope of the work and how the fee is determined. Fees for tax preparation depend on the forms required and the condition of your records, and are confirmed up front.
Nothing on this page is tax advice for your specific situation. Tax rules change frequently, and advice is provided only as part of a signed engagement with our office, after we have reviewed your documents and facts.
Every return is different, but certain situations come up again and again with our local clients: a farm family with both W-2 wages and Schedule F income; a retiree with Social Security, a pension and an IRA distribution; a main-street shop owner who needs both the business return and the family return in one place; a couple who sold a piece of land; a young worker in their first year of self-employment. If any of these sound familiar, we've handled them before — many times.
A tax return doesn't end on April 15. When the IRS or the South Dakota Department of Revenue sends a notice, when you receive a form you don't understand, or when you're making a decision with tax consequences during the year — selling equipment, starting payroll, changing how your business is organized — our office answers the same phone number we answer in March. We help our clients respond to IRS correspondence and work through the issue to a resolution.
Photo ID, Social Security cards (or the SSNs) for everyone on your return, all income documents (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s), records of deductions and credits, last year's tax return if you have it, and bank details if you want direct deposit of a refund. Our FAQ page has a fuller list.
Yes. We e-file federal and state returns whenever the return type permits it. It's faster and more secure than paper, and refunds generally arrive sooner.
We can prepare and file an extension on your behalf. Remember that an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay — we'll help you estimate any payment that should go in with the extension.
